Introducing Albert and ScholarStem
Hello out there! How are y’all doing? Big shout out to the Allen Mentoring family!
My name is Albert Monina and I’m excited to bring something new to the learning party: after-school programs focused on technology. We are providing Game Design classes for schools so students can bring their creative visions to life and learn core coding concepts. Using the MIT-developed program Scratch, students can design, code, and share their own games.
But that’s not all we’re doing: we’ve got a Computer Building class and some other top-secret programs in the works. Keep on the lookout for more classes and feel free to send along any ideas if you’ve got ‘em. We have a talented team here putting together new curricula every day and your idea could be the inspiration for a new class that eventually comes to your school!
How We Got Here
Allen and I grew up together and always shared a passion for education. We’d take turns schooling each other on the basketball court, and we’d always share the coolest online learning materials we could find. While Allen and I attended different colleges, we’d meet up during breaks, talks about the future of education, and dream big. Allen went on to start AM and I refined my skills as a software developer working for a small company in Manhattan.
Now, more than two years later, I’ve joined Allen in his quest to create a better future for education. With the launch of ScholarStem, we are hoping to give young students strong foundations in technology and inspire them to innovate by embracing their creativity.
How You Can Help – Learn and Let Learn
So what do our after-school programs have to do with the Allen Mentoring family? I’ll tell you: our new outreach initiative “Learn and Let Learn” (LALL) grants free hours of after-school programming for every hour of private mentoring that you receive. So when you book a session with one of our top mentors, you will not only be contributing to your own child’s success, but also opening doors for other students in need.
We already have 24 students learning game design at Lower Manhattan Community Middle School (LMC 896) through LALL. Each student is learning how to code and is in the process of designing their own original game.
Help ScholarStem expand by connecting us with the administration at your school!
