My son’s middle school math training did not adequately prepare him for the double math he was faced with as a freshman at Stuyvesant H.S., and he quickly fell behind in the first couple months of high school. Our mentor’s calm and steady hand helped guide him back to math mastery. I will certainly try to use Allen Mentoring again when it comes time for my kids to study for the SATs.
My son needed extra help to get ready for 4th grade common core testing. He really dislikes math and in 3-4 months of working with his tutor Klint he went from 3rd grade math level to working on 5th grade math. I would recommend Allen Mentoring for mentoring/tutoring services to others. Klint was fantastic…. He was so well versed on the subject and was detailed with his study notes for my son. He was thorough and thoughtful. He was a true Mentor and very smart young man. We hope to continue to have Klint as my son’s mentor when we return because he was truly wonderful. He made my son feel smart and helped him begin liking math when he at one point hated it.
My daughter has difficulty with standardized tests and her initial SAT scores were below the cutoff for the colleges she picked. After 3 months of tutoring with Allen Mentoring and hard work, the scores went up dramatically: reading 110+, math 110+ and writing 160+. Our mentor was very skilled at targeting what a student needs to learn and at explaining good strategies for taking the tests. But he also developed a special rapport with my daughter that allowed him to build up her confidence. This priceless intangible was a critical component to her success.

I sought mentoring services for my daughter who was struggling with math. Her grade in math had dropped dramatically when she entered junior high school as a fifth-grader. She was no longer the confident student she’d been in elementary school. I knew then that we had to intervene and get a grip on the issue before it got worse. I started working with Allen mentoring after her first semester’s report card and I immediately saw huge improvement in her exam scores and a remarkable increase in her GPA over the course of the following semesters. She finished her fifth-grade year with a 3.6 GPA. Today, my scholar, who recently completed her sixth-grade year has a 4.4 GPA and I credit much of her success to her mentor who helped her to deconstruct difficult math problems and explain them in a way that she could understand and in some cases apply. What was nice about Harry is that he was very even, he does not try to push the student too hard, but the work that he gets done seems to be very good and very helpful. I think Allen Mentoring is a good squad. Harry covered a very large workload with her, 2.5 months, and another year’s worth of Chemistry. Claudia has a very busy schedule but Harry was able to help her with all the work.He actually made something impossible possible.
Allen has been tutoring my 12 year old son in 6th grade math since Dec 2013. Allen initially came to our home to tutor, but in order to work with my son’s changing schedule, he devised a way to tutor him via Skype. This continues to work out great. My son’s average was raised approx 7-10 points as a result of Allen’s tutoring and my son’s hard work. He helped my son’s confidence in Math and test taking and gave him advice regarding study tips and classwork. We are all happy with Allen, and look forward to continuing with him in the fall.
Allen has a very calming effect on students which helps them get past the initial stigma and resentment of their needing tutoring. He explains things clearly and understandably, and is very patient. He uses examples that students can relate to. Allen has a gentle way about him that makes students feel comfortable and inspires self-confidence. He also is a very good judge of how much tutoring and homework the student can handle before he/she “shuts down” or overloads.
